Metaphors

We read "Metaphors" by Sylvia Plath, which is a riddle poem using lots of descriptive, visual metaphors. Students then wrote their own metaphor poems describing aspects of their appearance.

2nd Period

Metaphors
Patrice P.

Chocolate brown drapes, perfect and soft and gentle.
Light brown stars on a cream sheet with light brown dots.
Gentle white figures with five points.
Gentle all year round.

Metaphors
Ishmael G.

White marble
But a red cherry
A bumpy road
With ocean's ripples
In the depression
There is a lion's stride
With a base of curved platforms
And a canopy of onyx leaves

Brendan L.

My head is a giant thumb print
My ears are upside down eggs
My teeth are pearls
My fingernails may be the heads of white haired people
My feet are those of a puppy
My legs are tree trunks
My scar is a happy face
My hair is a thick brush

Metaphors
Ruth T.

I'm a spark in the night
Branches on a tree
Legs on a tiger
pale pink, bright red
sky blue, grass green sunflower yellow
half of a heart, half of a strawberry
Curly citrus of an orange peel
Creamy white

Metaphors
Jenny S.

I am a body on earth
with toes like long baby carrots
with bitten nails of jagged knives
with fingers of lengthy twigs
my eyes are brown leaves
My brain is a ball of ideas
with ears of small swirly lollipops
I was born in this world
with my body this way
I can't change it anyway

5th Period

Kristen H.

Inside an apple
Outside a melon
Bread sticks
Mop on a stick
Long strand of dead
Point of a cone
Stuffy as can be
Leafs turning brown
Muddy green water

Joanna K.

They are two full circles glowing in the dark
They are deep pools of dark chocolate
It is a never ending pit in the dark muddy ground
They are ponds shimmering in the morning sunlight
They are dark gems in the rocks

Metaphors
Natalia C.

The color is so vibrant.
A dirty river,
A forest color.
I show you the mountains
And the rivers.
I am the ocean in which you travel.
I own the color in the sky when terrible tornado is approaching.
Look into my eyes and believe what I am saying.

Julia C.

I am ruler with ten inches
A twig chipped off at the end
A house with out two floors
Just one, but only one
I am just below the average line
A speck in a giant throng
I am not bothered by the
calls there's nothing wrong at all
Because I always say to you
I'm not short, you're just too tall

7th Period

Aura E.

A wisp of ash against a bright sky
the bottom of a murky pool
Hot lava seeps through cracked dirt
A cavern of stalagmites and stalactites that crush

Beatrice E.

The roots of a large tree
Stretching to the farthest corners
A mixture of dark chocolate chips
In a long brownie
A long rod

8th Period

Eva S.
Metaphors

My hair is bright yellow hay
Leaves on the tree in fall
and the sun at its height in the sky
My eyes are bright green gems
Grass in the wide open field
And leaves in the spring breeze
My hands are long pale forks
Sausages attached to a plate
A large giant duck bill
I am a tall straight tree
I am me

Jes M.

Not very witty but pretty sharp.
Pain with metal around every month.
Supposedly cleaned twice a day.
All of them one of a kind.
Tiny spaces in between them all.
They are white with red all around.

Adam W.

Full of scars from past bouts.
Aches from years of fighting.
Filled with signs of strength and weakness
Pain comes with all the losses.
Yet joy with each victory.
Has been through so much yet still well alive.
Protects all it covers.
Mostly there for shape and warmth.
Maybe not protect but keeps it all in.
For it is the main thing on my body it is my skin.

Chris B.

I'm a ruler four feet five inches
I have a cold death stare
Giraffe necks for arms
Big Elephant ears
Metal chains in my mouth
I have Einstein's brain
I walk with a peacock strut

Luis G.

A rowing water spout
A long canoe
A string holding a boulder
Half a coconut on a round grape
A cheetah running
A geometric figure

Shakespeare's Song of the Witches

After reading the "Song of Witches" from Macbeth, students wrote their own Halloween recipes.

2nd Period

Zaya G.
This is my charm of power and defeat
It may taste bitter; it may taste sweet
Throw in glitter & a few beets
Get some children, candy & sweets
Don't forget those ghosts & ghouls
To make them scream, roll & burn
Throw it in the pot, watch it all smell & rot!
It may taste bitter; it may taste sweet
But I'm sure you'll love my charm of power & defeat

Patrick G.
Bubble, bubble soil and light
Banish evil and make courage take flight
Bravery of the sacred beast,
and part of a dog that scampers during the great feast.
Leaves of the trees that grow in the forest
A fire that burns while the great Goron nourish.

Jonathan H.
Charm of Powerful Funny Pain

Funny, funny, full of fun
Jonny, Jonny has to run
If he runs he just might fall
Into the side of a concrete wall
This charm will cure the pain
Made from ground-up candy canes

5th Period

Nitasha M.
Double double toil and trouble
Santa's sleigh and hot chocolate bubbles
Christmas trees and presents too
Certainly there will not be a boo
The north pole's cold, and the reindeers nose
A warm fireplace to sit by with your hot toes

Double, double toil and trouble
Santa's sleigh and hot chocolate bubbles
Christmas caroling, people jolly
One thing's for sure the grudge won't be happy

Natalia C
Charm of Powerful Lies

Double, triple the lies
Come, come my flies
Swirl, Twirl and spin
In my good magnificent bin
Close you up and kill you now
Don't show me a frown
Down goes jealousy
And my favorite a little wild mousy
Oops forgot te snake
A poisonous cake for people who make these mistakes

Nicole W.
Double, Double bubbles in trouble
pop, pop goes that bubble
put the cauldron
boil and steam
toes of frog
and snake tongue too
Poison darts and flowers too
Boil and steam
'till the thing is made
Stir, stir like it's the end of the world
And it's made
just for you (and the bubbles of course)

7th Period

Jacob S.
Deformed full of warts and smelly
We have a big belly
From eating kids, humans and animals
Such as mammals
Late nights are nice
Even if they are full of ice
Never we open gates to lemurs
for the have no femurs
We like to scare and
we are always there.

Chris B
When this spell is done
There wil be no nickels and dimes
Money will come in time
No more bills to pay
Each man will shout and cry
In the pot there shall lay
A crocodiles eye
Two ounces of toad mucus

Clarice B
This is a spell of love
I won't add in a dove
I'll add something nice
And a powerful spice
This is starting to bubble
For I am in no trouble
Lets add some sugar
Definitely not a burger
Maybe just a bun
For now this spell is done.

Rocio M.
Capricorn of starry night
Right above the sky of fright
Summon those of high and low
Let the magic burst and glow
Marvels, goblins, snakes and toad
Behold the light upon the road
Follow the footsteps that appear
Leave the Earth and disappear

8th Period

Adam W.
Double Double Chicago's sports are in trouble
Fire burn and cauldron bubble
the muscle of a quarter back
make the cauldron turn deep black
add the speed of the best receiver
makes the opponents quiver
get the strength of a batter
that will make the people chatter
Make Chicago all time champs
to make all the others look like chumps

Jes M.
Thanksgiving
Double, double mashed potatoes with gobbles;
Pumpkin pie and stomach grumbles.
When we add some stuff that's good;
We won't want any other food.
When they smell this all together;
People will begin to gather.
But when they all get here;
They will get a great scare.
Because they will realize;
Their food is cover in flies.

Elena H.
Bubble, Bubble Chaos and trouble
Give me some newts and male it double
A poison to make you hazy
don't think that this is crazy
dog fur and rabbit's foot
on the shelf you will put
eye of newt and fang of vampire
through the air you will float higher
as I make the sky turn gray
scare the whole town away
make fools out of them all
from the sky souls will fall
Bubble bubble chaos and trouble
Show me terror I'll give you double

Anaphora poems using "I am"

Seventh graders at the Taft Academic Center wrote poems using anaphora, or repetition of the beginning of the line, after reading M. Scott Momaday's "The Delight Song of Tsoai-Talee"

2nd Period

I am a sunflower in a prairie filled with weeds
I am a delicate, fragile rose in a dead meadow
I am the soft chirp of birds
I am the gentle deer in a forest of ravenous creatures
I am a starfish, laying at the bottom of the water
I am the seaweed, swaying back and forth with the waves

I am the leaf in the middle of fall, flying in the wind
I am the twinkle of a happy person's eye
I am the quiet prairie by the noisy city.

I am all the colors of the trees.

I am the make-up on your face

Julia C.

I am the flag billowing in the strong wind
I am the tear glistening in the silent eye
I am the water's reflection rippled by rocks
I am the flute played in beautiful tone
I am the last wave crashing before a typhoon
I am the tiny cloud shaped by the wind
I am the last minute until the end of a long day
I am the corner of the bed covers never used
I am the shooting star in a cloudless night sky

7th Period

I am the voice in your head that cheers for you

I am the joy in peoples lives.
I am the strength in people.

I am the nightmare in the middle of the night.
I am the dream of the day.
I am the turtle of the sea.
I am the falcon of the air.
I am the cold in winter.
I am the heat of summer.
I am the valley of the low.
I am the king of love.
I am the prince of hatred.
I am the tiger of the fierce.
As you can see I am everything.
I am the money of the rich.
I am the rags of the poor.
I am the happiness of the beautiful.
I am the sadness of the ugly.
As you can see I am everything.
